Doctor Who: The Almost People
Three words: OH. MY. GOD. That was A-W-E-S-O-M-E! The thing I really do love about Steven Moffat's take on DW is its unpredictabilty, I mean did anyone see the little girl regenerating when they first watched 'Day Of The Moon? The term WTF?! is probably best described when talking about the last five minutes of this Episode, but I'll get to that shortly. I want to talk about the preceding 45 minutes and how good it was, because the twist at the end seems to have gotten more attention rather than the superb storytelling before it. That was a really heavy Episode, that took the whole doppelganger plotline and really ran with it. The two Doctor's idea was a stroke of genius (but they would have been MAD to have not done it!) and Matt Smith was rather good playing both of them. It would be bonkers to compare him to David Tennant (year he was the best Doctor no doubt) but I have to say I think I finally fully excepted him as 'The Doc' in this Ep. David who? The Gangers really were the good guys as it turned out, (par one of course) and the evidence was layed bare for all to see and I had conflicted emotions throughout. Your brain excepts the fact that they are merely copies of a great human being but your heart says something different, Ganger Jimmy's sub-plot envolving his son's birthday nailed this emotion for me. There was some head scratching though, the whole Ganger Jennifer vs Ganger Jennifer thing had me really confused, and the sudden turn to evil from alt Jennifer was a bit too sudden. You really felt for her in the last Episode but here she was a straight up MONSTER. No, literally. That thing with the shape-shifting really made me feel scared for once, even if it was a bit of wonky CGI. Another thing that I suppose I can ignore was the lack of development for two of the Human's/Ganger's. The guy that couldn't stop sneezing had no subplot at all and the Scottish/Northen accent guy was worse, in both cases just being killed off with no real character development. Which was I suppose was a change for the best, because it gave time for the other three Ganger's/Human's to be fully 'fleshed' out. If the Episode was longer I think they could have utilised the extra ten minutes to 'flesh' them out a bit more but hey you can't have everything can you? Seriously though, cut back on the number of Episodes and just make Doctor Who an HOUR long for every Episode, because the show needs more time, even in two parters!
Now lets talk about THAT big twist, which was kinda genuis. If you haven't watched the Episode yet then don't under any circumstances read the following paragraph!
In short: Amy Pond was kidnapped a looong while ago and was impregnated (or at least I think she was impregnated) by someone, while being held in a prison cell for nine months hooked up to a Ganger or a 'faux Amy'. So the Amy we've been seeing for the past six Episodes wasn't the real Amy at all! WHAT A TWIST! And one that, I suppose after all the crazy stuff that's been happening, didn't seem to be that much of a shocker. Still it's good to know that TWO of the main questions has been answered. Yes, now several more have appeared:
- WHO kidnapped Amy?
- WHAT for?
- WHEN?
- WHERE?
- WHY?
- HOW?
Yep, things have gotten even more interesting now...WATCH THE INTERNET BURN!!!!!!
So Overall an extremely good Episode, and is now the true champion of this Season so far (and what competition!) with great character moments, shocking twists, cool suspense and a few scares knocked in for good mesure! Which makes it all the more hard for the next Episode 'A Good Man Goes To War' to knock my socks off completely. Lets hope it's the Moff's masterpiece, I don't want the reveal of River Song to be anticlimactic! Anyway LONG LIVE DOCTOR WHO I say!
